Children’s Department

How to become a member?

Students under 16 can become members of the children’s library; only registration at our institution is necessary. Membership is free. However, an adult member of your family has to assume financial responsibility for your loans and you receive a membership card, that is, a library card.
The library card is valid for a year, so you have to renew it annually. You need the library card for library visits, so make sure you bring it every time you come.
If you come with your parents, brothers or sisiter, who do not own a library card, you can also have a family library card, which you can use individually or together, when you come to the library and borrow books.

Choice of books

In the loan area you have open access to about 80,000 books. The books are grouped by theme, based on the fields of interest of our readers.

  • Books of poetry, pictures and tales for the smallest.
  • Youth and historical fiction and a selection of bestsellers of classic and contemporary children’s literature are offered to schoolchildren who wish to read and have fun.Lower grade students interested in sciences may find educational books, whereas upper grade students may find more detailed publications.
  • This is where you find novelties in our online book review  >>

You may loan the books for 4 weeks, 10 books at most at the time. Please do stick to this date because others might be interested in the books. You may request additional time twice by telephone or personally, if no one else reserved the book. If your book is overdue, you will have to pay a fine.
Reading room
Books in the reading room may only be used on the spot. These are called handbooks because they always need to be at hand, so that you can check what you want to know. They can only be lent for 1 day (from closing until opening of the library) overnight or for the week-end.
Although periodicals are located in the loan area, they are for consultation only. You can find children and youth magazines and periodicals.

If you found a piece of information that you cannot take home, you may ask for photocopies from the library’s documents upon payment

Computer use

Computers and Internet are indispensable today when looking up information. In this department you will find Internet access and you may also use the library’s electronic catalogue.
You may as well print from the computer upon payment.

We gladly welcome nursery-school children, daytime groups and classes for a visit. Attending our activities is free of charge. Groups are welcome on appointment.
